Batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles continue to evolve, and BMW is at the forefront of innovation. This carmaker has now partnered with battery parts maker Solid Power to develop an all-solid-state battery (ASSB) for its vehicles, including the BMW i7. BMW of Catonsville has the details on this partnership.
What is an All-Solid-State Battery?
As the name implies, an ASSB contains components that are all solid, so there is no liquid or gel like traditional batteries. With a solid electrolyte, ions can more easily move between electrodes, which aids the flow of electricity.
What are the Benefits of an ASSB?
An ASSB offers many advantages. First, it can achieve a higher energy density, which allows it to store more energy in smaller spaces or with less weight. It may also be able to provide faster charging times and longer lifespans. Finally, an ASSB enhances safety, as solid electrolytes are typically more stable and less flammable.
BMW and Solid Power Partnership
Since 2022, BMW and Solid Power have had a technology transfer agreement, and they are now working together to create what could be a revolutionary ASSB. A BMW i7 has been the test subject, and so far, the results are quite promising.
“Solid Power is extremely proud that our partnership with BMW has resulted in the first demonstration of truly all-solid-state battery cells in a vehicle,” said John Van Scoter, President and Chief Executive Officer of Solid Power. “We believe in the promise of ASSB’s and continue to drive innovation of our sulfide electrolyte in support of that future for EVs.”
The concept battery used in the BMW i7 test vehicle combines Gen5 construction principles with new module concepts for integrating ASSB cells. Researchers are looking at the management of cell expansion, along with how the operating pressure is controlled and how temperature conditions can be adjusted. Their finding could ultimately have a significant impact on the automotive industry.
