Will you be taking a trip this spring or summer? If it involves leaving the state via an airplane, you need to ensure you have the proper ID, as rules are changing. Starting May 7, flyers may need a REAL ID. BMW of Catonsville has the details that you need to know.

What is a REAL ID?

REAL ID was passed in 2005 to improve security post-9/11. While implementation has been slow, the deadline is fast approaching; states and citizens suddenly find themselves rushing to catch up. This more stringent ID is mandated for domestic flights and entry to many federal facilities.

Passport vs. REAL ID

There has been some confusion surrounding REAL ID, as many believe it is the same as a passport. While similar, they aren’t the same. If you have a valid passport, you can use it to fly both in America and around the globe. Your REAL ID is only valid domestically, but it will be necessary if you don’t have a passport.

Obtaining a REAL ID

Securing a REAL ID isn’t difficult. You will need to visit an MDOT MVA location in person and provide original or certified copies of these documents:

  • U.S. birth certificate or valid and unexpired U.S. passport
  • Social Security card, benefits statement from the Social Security Administration, or your most recent W-2 form
  • 2 proofs of Maryland residency, which can include vehicle registration, utility bills, or bank statements

Time to Upgrade Your ID – and Your Vehicle?

Even if you decide to skip the airport – few things beat a road trip in a new BMW vehicle – it’s still a good idea to iron out your REAL ID sooner rather than later. After all, you never know when you might need it. For help with sales, service, and financing, plus support long after you buy or lease your vehicle, visit our BMW dealership in Baltimore, MD.
