If you’re thinking about a BMW electric vehicle, you’re probably already envisioning never again having to stop and get gas. You do, however, have to think about how you will power your vehicle. Did you know there are three different levels when it comes to charging?
Level 1
The most basic charging level involves a 120-volt household-style outlet. All you need to do is plug your car into an outlet in your garage (or perhaps an extension cord from your home), and you can get your vehicle juiced up. This level does take a while, as it adds between three and five miles of driving range per hour.
Level 2
Level 2 charging requires an outlet with between 208 and 240 volts. If you don’t already have one of these in your home, it can be installed. Much quicker than Level 1, depending on the charger, you’ll be able to add between 12 and 80 miles of range with Level 2 charging. This should get your electric car’s battery fully charged overnight.
Level 3
Level 3 charging utilizes direct current (DC), unlike the first two charging levels that use alternating current (AC). This enables Level 3 chargers – like those DC Fast Charging stations you’ve probably seen – to juice up electric cars very quickly. Because they use a 400- to 900-volt outlet, they can add between three and 20 miles of range per minute.
