The way things are going these days it sure does look as if hydrogen fuel cell technology is the future of green driving. While there still hasn’t been any real indication as to whether or not a wide-scale infrastructure of hydrogen fueling stations is going to be logistically feasible, or whether automakers and engineers will have to figure out a way to come up with ways to fuel up from home, we do know that hydrogen fuel cell drivetrains are so green that they only emit water vapor. If that’s the end game, it’s no wonder that more and more automakers are jumping aboard the movement to develop vehicles that use this new technology.

BMW, ever a leader in all kinds of different auto-related tech, is not standing idly by through this transformative era in green driving. Since 2013 they have been working on HFC tech and have made enough progress to start having conversations about when a production model using this new sort of drivetrain might debut.

We don’t know exactly when that model will hit manufacturing plants, but it’s starting to sound more and more like we could have one before the end of the decade. That estimate comes from earlier reports that may or may not ultimately prove to be true, but videos this past summer showed that BMW is working on new BMW i8 HFC and 5-Series HFC models, both of which would certainly add a lot to their respect model lines.

While these vehicles may still be a few years away, we’re thrilled at the idea of selling innovative BMW cars that do so much in terms of environmental friendliness. Whatever the wait, we’re sure it will be worth it!
